Job Description


This position is responsible for management of the area laboratory pathology support operations to include Pathology Assistant, Path Support and Administrative personnel. The person in this position implements plans for operations to include technical, personnel, and quality assurance in all areas. Assists in developing mechanisms to measure, monitor budget, and improve operational expense efficiencies. Develops and maintains good relationships with customers, physicians, and colleagues in order to ensure customer satisfaction.



  • Support PathGroup’s mission, vision, goals and management decisions. 
  • Assist with development of and implement effective plans and programs for pathology support services operation; including technical, personnel, facilities, management, and quality assurance.
  • Oversee operations and personnel within the area laboratories.
  • Achieve budget profitability objectives through controlling costs and/or increasing market share by effectively utilizing personnel and resources.
  • Maintain appropriate standards to meet all licensing and regulatory requirements and uphold company policies and integrity.
  • Assist in development of and recommend technical operating and capital expense budgets; ensure compliance with approved budgets.
  • Set targets and objectives to meet budgets and show improvements.
  • Work closely with management to develop mechanisms to measure, monitor budget and improve operational expense efficiencies.
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with customers, physicians, colleagues, and suppliers in order to ensure customer satisfaction and integration of business processes to meet their needs.
  • Work closely with human resources to develop personnel standards and policy.
  • Work closely with information technology people to prepare and implement IS strategy.
  • Maintains appropriate standards to meet all licensing and regulatory requirements and uphold company policies and integrity.
  • Various duties to include accessioning and gross examination of tissue specimens, functioning independently under direction of the pathologists.

  • Manage the employee hiring process including developing and updating job descriptions, developing performance expectations, identifying essential functions and knowledge, skills and abilities required for applicable positions, and selecting and assigning staff.  
  • Supervise/manage employee and team performance including coordinating activities, scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees.
  • Responsible for new employee orientation processes, employee training and continuing education.
  • Manage employee performance by coaching, counseling, motivating, and evaluating employees on a continual basis.  Implement disciplinary action as needed and in consultation with Human Resources. 
  • Ensure effective employee relations by sustaining an ethical, non-discriminatory and safe work environment and establishing effective communication lines and methods.  Identify and solve employee problems, manage conflict, and respond to grievances as needed. 
  • Ensure staff adheres to all laboratory safety precautions and to lab procedures as stated in procedure manual.

Job Requirements


  • High School Diploma or GED with technical training of 2 years is required.
  • B.S/B.A degree is preferred.  . 
  • ASCP or equivalent certification and State of Tennessee license are required. 
  • Maintains appropriate continuing education for certification/licensure, and to increase basic knowledge.


  • Over five years of experience as a licensed Pathologist Assistant is required.
  • Management experience is required. Must have proven track record in physician, employee, and client relationships and in operational and financial performances.
